Some time ago it was announced that Brie Larson would play the stupendous hero, Captain Marvel, officially becoming part of this big, crazy Marvel universe and everything that comes with it. If she soars she will earn a shining spot along the halls dweeb-dom, with fans going as far as to tattoo her likeness on their back. But she didn’t exactly leap at the chance to take on the role, instead approaching it carefully with deep thought and staring out windows.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar winner talked about her thought process when it came to accepting the role when offered it. Though most of us would murder a close relative to get the role, Larson had to do some deep thinking before accepting the uniform:
It took me a really long time. I had to sit with myself, think about my life and what I want out of it. Ultimately, I couldn’t deny the fact that this movie is everything I care about, everything that’s progressive and important and meaningful, and a symbol I wished I would’ve had growing up. I really, really feel like it’s worth it if it can bring understanding and confidence to young women—I’ll do it.
She went on to talk about her current working relationship with Marvel, saying the studio has been very collaborative and open to hearing her thoughts on the character:
They’ve been very open to hearing my thoughts and my take on it, which has been great. I think that’s why they cast me: I have a lot of similarities to this character, and they want me to bring that into the movie.
Larson is currently on a hot streak after winning an Oscar for ROOM last year, starring in KONG: SKULL ISLAND last month, and with FREE FIRE currently lighting up the indie box office. Things are going well for the CAPTAIN MARVEL movie, too, as it was announced recently that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck would be directing the movie, ensuring that the engines are indeed starting to rev-up on the production front.
I think as fans we got the best deal we could hope for with Larson’s casting. Of course fans will always have their own vision as to who should be the hero, and trolls will always be quick to put her down, but Larson is one of the best young actresses working today and the MCU is lucky to have her. She will no doubt bring a sense of strength to the character, not to mention a quick wit and infectious charm. We should all be glad she said yes, and I demand you send her gift baskets now. And none of that Wal-Mart hand cream crap. Only top shelf for Captain Marvel!
CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives March 8, 2019.
