It’s the Booze Talkin: Stop the nonsense and let Miller make a new Mad Max!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

In 2015, George Miller gave fans something truly special. As Hollywood continues to push crappy sequels and remakes that rarely even come close to the original, the famed director brought us a spectacular cinematic experience. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is a masterpiece of a movie. Fans and critics alike embraced this insane jolt of a flick, and it even took home a massive six Academy Awards, including Margaret Sixel’s magnificent editing work – it was also up for Best Picture and Best Director, a total of ten nominations. With an unforgettable villain played by Hugh Keays-Byrne, an iconic Furiosa played by Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy kicking ass as Max Rockatansky, this was a movie miracle. Fury Road managed to please the many fans of the previous films in the series, yet it found a brand new following for the world of MAD MAX.

It’s no secret I’m a fan of this movie. In fact, the entire franchise ranks as one of my all-time favorites. It helps that we’ve had the same vision since way back when Miller crafted the groundbreaking original MAD MAX in 1979. THE ROAD WARRIOR only continued my love. When this 1981 classic was on television, I was ready to watch every single time. And while some of you may not appreciate the beauty of MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME, I kind of love that one too. This apocalyptic world where “guzzoline” is in dire need, and lawlessness rules the land, always satisfied my movie loving heart. And that was only pushed to the extreme when FURY ROAD rocked my world! And yes, many of us want a sequel.

Considering the many Oscars, and a respectable worldwide box office with just under 400 million, it seems to be very clear that a sequel should be coming right? Even Miller himself has said that he has two film ideas that would follow FURY ROAD – one would explore Furiosa a bit more. Needless to say, I’d love to see either one or both. Yet I would hate to see it rushed, neither would I want to see any other filmmaker behind Max. This is George Miller’s creation, and it is one that I don’t believe could be fully realized by anyone else as long as Miller is around to show the young folk how it's done. He understands the insanity of the world, the need to keep the effects practical and the power of visual storytelling.

With nearly all MAD MAX fans intent on a sequel, recent news has made it all the more unlikely we will get one. Miller and his production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, are currently battling Warner Bros in an ugly legal dispute. The most unfortunate thing about it is that it seems like a simple fix. Miller claims he was eligible for $9 million for coming in under budget, while WB claims that it didn’t. That’s part of it at least. There are several other details, and with this current legal matter, it is unlikely we will see a continuation anytime soon. As a movie fan this really pisses me off, especially as a MAD MAX fan. You can read a little bit more about the legal mess going on here.

Here is the thing, I love this movie and I love the series. I’ve seen it numerous times, and the idea of seeing the actors and Miller return excites me more than you can imagine. And I’m sure I’m not alone. Even in his seventies, Miller remains one of the most exciting, original and competent filmmakers around. However, time is passing quickly, and while we clearly had to wait several years between BEYOND THUNDERDOME and FURY ROAD, it’s a safe bet that things are different now. And of course with the success of the later, this is a movie that fans would happily embrace. Considering the series’ track record, I have absolute faith that Miller can still create something epic.

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but I think it’s time to stop the nonsense and let George Miller make another Mad Max movie. As a huge fan of Miller and this apocalyptic world he has crafted, it’s a real shame that he can’t continue with this thrilling series. The filmmaker has ideas to expand on Fury, but he is not getting any younger. If we are going to get a sequel to one of the best action films of the decade, we don’t have much time. And considering that FURY ROAD took several years to finally make happen, any type of delay is keeping the director from continuing this incredible journey. Come on guys, what the hell are we waiting for now? So stop the shenanigans, figure this shite out, and let George Miller make another classic.
