Well, this is disappointing news. While the (reportedly) 100-million dollar POWER RANGERS movie did decent business in the US (around $85 million), it was assumed that the foreign box-office would pick up the slack, and still make a POWER RANGERS franchise viable. That’s precisely what happened with PACIFIC RIM, so it seemed likely to happen with this film as well.
However, that was not the case. The studio hoped to make a sizable chunk back from China, but after it opened up to a paltry $1.2 million on its first day, that was a pretty major blow. It’s true it made an extra $50 million in other foreign markets, and has yet to open in Japan (where the original Super Sentai show the original MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS was based on), so there’s still hope. Just not much.
Like I said, this is disappointing news. I actually thought the first film was pretty good (and probably the best we could hope for in a POWER RANGERS movie). It was fun without being campy, and serious without delving into “grim ‘n gritty”, which is no small feat – especially with this property. And the young cast was just a delight. So hopefully we’ll see more of them in the future, regardless of POWER RANGERS’ fate.
But what do you Schmoes think? Any other fans of the movie? Either way, sound off below!
Meanwhile POWER RANGERS is still playing in select theaters.
