After having a solid opening weekend (in only 4 theaters!) that yielded an impressive $160,000 for three days, David Robert Mitchell's IT FOLLOWS is set to expand to more theaters this weekend. But it seems that distributor Radius had plans to release it even wider later this month, which could have set the VOD debut back from its original March 27 date, according to IndieWire.
This past Saturday a Radius spokesman emailed that the film was a "clean" theatrical release and later denied it had a confirmed VOD date, although multiple published sources listed a March 27 VOD release.
After a frantic post-weekend Monday as the company responded to unexpectedly strong initial showings in New York and Los Angeles, Radius told theaters that they were going to expand to about 1,000 theaters on March 27. But by day's end they had returned to their original VOD plan, possibly in part under pressure from cable companies and other home viewing platforms. According to IndieWire, release plans were up in the air Monday, with initial indications that the VOD release would be delayed, but now it seems that IT FOLLOWS will hit VOD as originally scheduled, although some theatrical dates will expand this coming weekend.
Tom Quinn, Co-President of Radius-TWC, said that the version of the switchback in plans was "wrong," but would not specify details, nor did he deny that VOD plans are still set for March 27.
To be honest, I'd much rather see IT FOLLOWS in theaters than on VOD, but perusing the official IT FOLLOWS website that lists the theaters where the film will be playing this upcoming weekend, it doesn't appear to be coming close to my neck of the woods. I'm just hoping I get to see it sooner rather than later, and a March 27 VOD release works just fine for me since it doesn't look like I'll be able to catch it in a theater.
