Genre fans have been anxiously waiting to hear what project would bring writer/director Issa López back to horror after her highly acclaimed horrific fairy tale Tigers Are Not Afraid. She has been developing a supernatural revenge thriller for Legendary and a supernatural Western involving werewolves that Guillermo del Toro is attached to executive produce. She’s working on projects with Fargo‘s Noah Hawley and Blumhouse Productions. And now she has set up a project at HBO Max. López will be directing and producing The Girl with a Thousand Names for the streaming service.

According to The Wrap, The Girl with a Thousand Names “will likely have the same blend of true-life horror and magical realism” as Tigers Are Not Afraid did. Deadline says it’s described as

a fantastically real story of a child from another world, trapped in our broken reality… without documents, in a detention center for unaccompanied minors and children separated from their families at the U.S. border.

López produces through her Peligrosa label, alongside MACRO, “a multi-platform media company representing the voice and perspectives of Black people, indigenous people and people of color”. MACRO’s Charles D. King and Poppy Hanks are producers, while Gaby Mena and MACRO’s Greta Talia Fuentes will be executive producing.

At the moment, it’s looking like The Girl with a Thousand Names will be the next López movie to start filming. It sounds interesting, but I was really hoping that Guillermo del Toro werewolf Western would be the first to roll. Two and a half years have already gone by since López said that del Toro loved the script she had written for that project and they were “gearing up to make it”. Hopefully it will be next up after this one then.
