One of the chief complaints of Joss Whedon‘s THE AVENGERS was Captain America’s costume, which was a fairly direct translation from comic to screen. I saw this as a bonus to the film, as it showed that Whedon wasn’t afraid to let these characters be the comic book characters they are instead of a bunch of cryptic, leather-wearing, MATRIX wannabe’s (Yeah, I’m lookin’ at you X-MEN). I think the biggest problem with Cap’s costume in THE AVENGERS was the mask/helmet, but overall I was pleased they stuck to their guns. The WWII costume in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER was one I was nervous about when hearing about it, but was stoked when I saw it.
Now, it seems that both costumes have been merged into one for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, if this concept art is the real deal. CBM had a scooper send in the below image, which shows a combined effort of the costumes from the first Cap and THE AVENGERS, incorporating the brown straps and a modified chest piece, much like the Steve Rogers costume in the comics. Of course, this could just be one variable of many, but it’s a move in the right direction if accurate. Either way, I expect we’ll see a modified costume that builds on the successful aspects of Cap’s previous appearances on film. I have faith they’ll segue into a kick ass outfit (and the first tease was a good indicator) and if this is it, I’m sold.
