Seems like more and more information keeps rolling in for Marvel’s Phase 3 frontrunner DOCTOR STRANGE. Latino Review has information on the plot details of the initial origin film that the studio is prepping, while a source for CBM has info on how Marvel is approaching the character. Up to this point, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been held together with the glue of Robert Downey Jr., who will be sticking around for at least two more films as the iconic Iron Man. However, moving into Phase 3, it appears that Marvel will be looking for some “new glue” to hold it all together, potentially with the good doctor himself.
According to CBM’s source, DOCTOR STRANGE is being groomed to be the next “Iron Man,” taking the lead as the character who binds not only the Earth-bound superheroes together, but also the intergalactic and interdimensional ones as well. Here’s the source:
“What I can say is that Strange is being groomed to be the next Iron Man. The studio needs a new ‘hub’ character going into Phase 3 and beyond, as there is audience fatigue, aging stars and a need to move from Tony Stark/Iron Man as a ‘hub’ for films.”
The same source has said that there will be a big DOCTOR STRANGE announcement at Comic Con this year as well. No word on what that announcement will entail, but I’d put my money on casting. Marvel will need to put a face to DOCTOR STRANGE at some point, especially if he’s going to carry the cinematic universe on his shoulders. If true, this could mean that the character may appear well ahead of his solo film, much like Nick Fury in the first IRON MAN. That’s just speculation on my part, but it seems consistent with the Marvel model so far.

So, what do you think? Can DOCTOR STRANGE carry the Marvel Cinematic Universe post Tony Stark/Iron Man?
