The LA Times today ran an article on the long-delayed Warner Bros. remake of a remake of a remake in THE INVASION, which really hasn’t done much explaining for the tardiness (or the numerous name changes). Well, the article did touch on the former, with the explanation that studio bigwigs didn’t find enough action in the film to their satisfaction, as well as hinting that they were at odds with foreign director Oliver Hirschbiegel.
So much so, that Warner brought in the Wachowski siblings (who the hell knows if Larry got that operation or not) to do rewrites and had V FOR VENDETTA director James McTeigue come in and shoot the rewrites. $10 million later, and the film has it’s August 17th release. The lack of action wasn’t the only thing Warner had a beef with, as budget constraints got in the way as well (funny considering said action sequences were cut due to the budget, yet they went and spent more money anyways).
As for why Oliver didn’t do the reshoots, Warner chief Alan Horn stated that Oliver “wasn’t available”, then went on to brush off the rumours of friction between the parties, saying that the studio has a great track record with foreign directors. Obviously, he stopped short of calling this film a disaster, which is what this is starting to sound like. We’ll find out for sure come August.
