Bobby Farrelly is back with something surprising in the latest from one half of The Farrelly Brothers – the fellas behind Stuck on You, There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin, and much more. His latest feature, Champions, is a movie with a massive heart. The story revolves around a disgraced coach, played by the highly charismatic Woody Harrelson, who is assigned a coaching job to a basketball team. Yet this team consists of a few “Champions” you may not expect. It’s funny and heartwarming, and it features a fantastic cast, from the players themselves to co-stars Cheech Marin and the lovely Kaitlin Olson.
I recently had the chance to chat with some of the fine folk behind this sweet film. First, Woody Harrelson is easily one of my favorite guys I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. He’s always been kind and engaging with his answers. And when you put him and Kaitlin Olson together, it’s just a wonderful time. The two opened up about working with this cast and, for Woody, reuniting with Mr. Farrelly. And Ms. Olson is simply fantastic in this film which I must emphasize. These two very talented people bring much joy to this charming story.
We also had the chance to speak with the man of the hour, Mr. Farrelly. As well we talked to the iconic and wonderfully talented Cheech Marin. Bobby Farrelly opened up about telling this tale and working with Mr. Harrelson once again. Mr. Marin, an excellent comedic and dramatic actor, discussed working with this team and taking on a more serious-minded feature. The new feature film will connect with audiences looking for a feel-good flick in a crazy time. Check out Woody, Kaitlin, Cheech, and the team in Champions, opening this Friday at a theatre near you. It’s well worth the experience.
Champions has the following synopsis: A former minor-league basketball coach receives a court order to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. Despite his doubts, he soon realizes that together they can go further than they ever imagined.
