Benicio Del Toro is one of those guys that you could actually make a fair comparison to such greats as James Dean or Marlon Brando. The swagger, the intensity and the cinematic presence for this guy is very clear. From his work in THE USUAL SUSPECTS to 21 GRAMS, all the way up to CHE, he is a force to be reckoned with. And now, he recreates the role in THE WOLFMAN made famous by Lon Chaney Jr. and he has some fine company to join him. But not only is Del Toro taking on the wolfman, Lawrence Talbot, he is also one of the film’s producers.
I’d never had the chance to meet Benicio before, and the first thing that really surprised me is that he is really tall. I don’t know why, I just didn’t expect that. I also didn’t expect him to be as nice as he was. He is very easy to talk to and his love for the classic monster movies is refreshing. I spoke with him about making a movie because of a poster on the wall, and I also brought up the idea of doing a sequel to his latest, and I’m talking an old school sequel like they used to do for Universal’s monster movies. Luckily, if you have a hankerin’ for THE WOLFMAN, you can find it opening this weekend at a theatre near you.
