Brett Ratner catches a lot of shit. Some of it deserved and some of it completely misdirected. There are a lot of people who don’t even know why they don’t like Brett Ratner, they just do. But in talking to the cast of TOWER HEIST, they absolutely love the guy.
Meeting Ratner in person, it’s easy to see how you can be seduced by his charm. He’s sharp and buoyant with the energy of an 8-year-old boy and the charm of a politician. It’s not surprising that he graduated from high school early and, after being rejected by NYU, was eventually accepted after pitching himself directly to the dean. He was 16 at the time.
I opened the interview talking Heavy D and the Boyz, where Ratner started back as a music video director in the early-90s. I, frankly, couldn’t talked old school hip-hop with Ratner all afternoon but eventually we segued into TOWER HEIST and the mind f*ck of directing Eddie Murphy in a comedy.
