Interview: James Wan, Jason Blum, Allison Williams, and Gerard Johnstone Talk M3GAN

I had no idea how much fun I was about to have when I entered the theatre to see M3GAN. Truthfully, I wasn’t fully sold having only watched the trailer once. Yet almost immediately this ridiculously entertaining flick charmed me. Directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound), the film manages to be creepy, clever, and hilarious. It’s a beautiful combination. And it also features a terrific leading lady courtesy of the very talented Allison Williams. With producers Jason Blum and James Wan – with Mr. Wan also having a “story by” credit – this is a shockingly cool treat to start 2023 off right. Get ready for M3GAN.

Last December, we had the chance to speak with some of the folks behind the latest from Blumhouse. First up, we took some time to speak with Gerard Johnstone. The filmmaker discussed how he approached this story, and without revealing too much, went into what made M3GAN tick. And speaking of what made this devious little AI tick, we spoke with Allison Williams. The very talented actress opened up about her own interest in AI, and of course, taking on yet another terrific leading lady in a genre feature. She’s excellent here, and she is absolutely lovely to chat with.

And finally, I sat down with two incredibly kind gentlemen, James Wan and Jason Blum. As a fan of both, it was clear that they had a whole lot of enthusiasm for their latest. The two talked about working with Johnstone, and bringing this unusual plaything to life. Honestly, don’t let the PG-13 rating frighten you off. See M3GAN as soon as you can. It’s one hell of a fun way to start off your horror viewing, and it’s far better than what we usually get in January. I highly recommend this ridiculously nutty fright flick.
