The Daniels’ latest feature has everything. In fact, it has Everything Everywhere All at Once. This delightfully fresh new multiverse adventure is like nothing you’ve seen before. And that is not hyperbolic. This wild film is emotional, comical, deadly, wild, and yet it’s all about the love of family. Look, if you have Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis headlining a film, it’s a damn good thing. Still, the two are surrounded by excellent performances, and two of those happen to be the very talented Stephanie Hsu and the wonderfully charming Ke Huy Quan. And if that last name sounds familiar to you, you will perhaps recognize him from The Goonies and as “Short Round” in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Both are excellent in this, in fact, Mr. Quan gives one of my favorite performances of the year thus far.
Interviewing the cast of a movie like this is especially satisfying. Not only are they massively enthusiastic about the project, but the entire premise lends itself to an interesting conversation. Speaking to both Stephanie and Ke was such a joy, especially when the latter mentioned his early days working with Spielberg. As for the lovely Ms. Hsu, she talked about taking on a mother/daughter relationship with Michelle Yeoh. Ultimately, this fantastical film is about the struggle of family and trying to connect to each other. It’s completely new, it’s thoughtful, and it sticks with you long after viewing. Everything Everywhere All at Once is that original and great new flick that should be seen. It’s opening wide today, and it’s the most worthwhile selection you can currently make in theatres.
