Interview: Jason Blum Talks The Black Phone

Jason Blum knows horror. With Blumhouse, the producer extraordinaire has created quite an incredible business model. Whether you love all of what they produce or some of what they produce, it’s nice to see a company bring audiences to this beloved genre in a new and exciting way. And I particularly admire Mr. Blum and his understanding and excitement when he offers something really special. Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone is really special. The horror thriller features superb performances from Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw, as well as a terrifying story that will connect with anybody who grew up in the Seventies or Eighties that remembers the kidnapping scares from the time. It’s an incredibly smart thriller with a terrific script.

I love talking to Jason Blum. Besides having a sincere admiration for the man, he’s also one of the kindest, and most engaging people to discuss pretty much anything with. For an interview about The Black Phone, we spend a bit of time on the poster for Skyfall that hangs in the back of me. Yet when we get into it, Jason’s love and passion for an original and brilliant film like The Black Phone comes to life. Please help out my man Jason Blum here, let’s prove this weekend that we really want original and none franchise horror more often. Go see The Black Phone!! It’s currently playing at a theatre near you, and I guarantee you that this one is special. Pick up the damn phone, it’s been ringing off the wall!
