Interview: Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern Talk Downton Abbey: A New Era

As someone who doesn’t watch much TV, I had never experienced Downton Abbey. It wasn’t until the feature films arrived that I decided to visit. And what joy that was. The cast is excellent, the direction is lovely, and the screenplays by Julian Fellowes are sublime. And that’s just the movies. I’ve enjoyed them so much that I’ve returned to the series. And for the latest feature, Downton Abbey: A New Era, the characters are just as delightful as before, with the familiar faces of Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton, Maggie Smith, and newcomers to the franchise, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, and Dominic West. And you will all be able to return to this delightful world this Friday when A New Era arrives in theatres. If you are a fan already, you’re in for a treat.

Recently, I had the privilege to interview some of the incredible cast featured in this terrific new Downton Abbey film. And it was beyond a thrill to chat with both Elizabeth McGovern – who I’ve been a fan of for years – as well as the great Hugh Bonneville. For Elizabeth, the actress has a very potent story arch this time around, one that really resonated with this viewer. Without spoilers, she discussed the direction that Cora Grantham takes this time around. And even her on-screen husband Robert Grantham, played by Mr. Bonneville, has a few dramatic turns in A New Era that will more than satisfy fans of the series. The two actors were delightful to speak to, and they continue to bring class to this effortlessly entertaining series. Even if you aren’t already a fan, you’ll likely be entertained. Downton Abbey: A New Era is an absolute treat.
