Interview: Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan talk about their hit Netflix series The Night Agent

Spies, secret agents, assassins, and government conspiracies are all the rage these days. Whether big-screen action epics or small-screen mystery thrillers, stories about shadowy cabals plotting against the powers that be never go out of style. When done well, these can be some of the best stories on the air. In the tradition of series like 24 and the Jason Bourne film franchise, the latest series to join the genre is Netflix’s The Night Agent.

Debuting to record-shattering numbers for Netflix and quickly garnering a second-season renewal, The Night Agent, based on the bestselling novel by Matthew Quirk, tells the story of Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso). An FBI agent working to redeem his name after his father was accused of being a spy, Sutherland mans the Night Action desk at the White House under the supervision of the President’s Chief of Staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau). When Sutherland receives a call from Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a disgraced tech CEO, they embark on a cat-and-mouse game with a pair of assassins working for a shadow conspiracy that reaches through the highest levels of U.S. intelligence and power.

I got to discuss the new series with stars Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan. The pair talked about what it was like headlining their spy series and what it was like playing in such an action-packed sandbox. We talked about their co-stars, the vision for the series, and what it was like working with Oscar nominee Hong Chau. I also asked Basso what it was like playing an action hero and asked Buchanan what the most challenging sequence was to film. Check out the full interview in the embed above.
