Interview: Destin Daniel Cretton Talks Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The latest from the MCU is a thrilling and magical mix of Kung-Fu and superhero powers. In fact, it may be one of the best “origin” stories to arrive in quite a while. Starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi and Awkwafina as his BFF Katy, the new flick features a ton of thrills and humor with a heart. Also starring Tony Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, and Fala Chen, the latest is an impressive entry from director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy), and one well worth a sequel. Shang-Chi is a terrific hero. And yes, the film is currently available in theatres, and on Disney +.

We recently had the chance to speak with Destin Daniel Cretton. During our Zoom conversation, the filmmaker opened up to how this opportunity came his way. He also discussed his influences, as you might find a little Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, or Fist of Fury on display. It was fantastic speaking with Mr. Cretton, and when I asked about a sequel, I found myself getting excited at the possibility of characters that he could bring into the mix. Marvel fans rejoice, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a delightful origin story. It’s a funny, action-packed flick with heart and tons of incredible action. Check this one out!
