The Boogeyman still stands as one of my favorite horror films of the year. It’s a classic tale anchored by some phenomenal performances from both Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Blair. But it’s really the technical side that impresses the most, with its interesting usage of light and fantastic cinematography. So I couldn’t have been more grateful to pick director Rob Savage’s brain about all things Boogeyman. He couldn’t have been nicer, giving great insight into some of the best scenes of the movie. We talked about the possibility of a sequel (and who I want to see get their comeuppance), as well as Disney’s refusal of the usage of a toy lightsaber ended up being a blessing in disguise. This was a great chat that you won’t want to miss!
Inspired by a Stephen King short story, The Boogeyman has the following plot: Still reeling from the tragic death of their mother, a teenage girl and her younger sister find themselves plagued by a sadistic presence in their house and struggle to get their grieving father to pay attention before it’s too late.
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) wrote the initial draft of the script for The Boogeyman, which was then rewritten by Akela Cooper (Malignant) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan). The film stars Chris Messina (Sharp Objects), Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box), Madison Hu (Voyagers), and David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad).
