Writer-director Leigh Whannell has announced that Dermot Mulroney will star in INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3. If you're just catching up on the fact that another INSIDIOUS movie is heading our way you should know that the stars of Chapter 1 & 2, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, will not be returning. While Mulroney usually plays it safe with supporting roles, he's always stood out to me as someone who could take the lead, maybe this is one of those roles for him. The plot of the new horror sequel is being kept under wraps for now.
It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that the franchise is being kept alive. They are two of the most profitable movies of the last few years; INSIDIOUS had a budget of $1.5 million and took home just under $100 million while INSIDEOUS CHAPTER 2 cost $5 million to produce and brought in a staggering $161 million.
We passed along some details for the third movie that Whannell shared in an interview with Screen Rant, here they are again:
A script for the film is complete.
Insidious 1 & 2 stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are NOT returning.
Insidious 3 will focus on a new family and story.
That story is NOT connected to the last scene in Insidious 2.
Whannell and Sampson WILL returns as ghost hunters Specs and Tucker, respectively.
I enjoyed both movies and even I'm sceptical that Chapter 3 can bring the smart writing and consistent scares that its predecessors did. James Wan directed those movies and then went on to scare the holy hell out of us again with THE CONJURING. Needless to say, with this being Leigh Whannell’s first feature film, he has some pretty big shoes to fill.
Will you be taking part in INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3? The movie hits April 3, 2015.
