Insidious 5: Patrick Wilson-directed sequel gets summer 2023 release date

Almost two years have gone by since it was announced that Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 star Patrick Wilson would be returning to the franchise to not only star in Insidious 5, but also direct the film. But while Wilson said that filming would begin in the spring of 2022, there’s still no indication that Insidious 5 has gone into production. That could be worrying – if not for the fact that Sony has just confirmed that they’re planning to give Insidious 5 a theatrical release on July 7, 2023!

Sony previously had the Marvel Comics-inspired film Madame Web scheduled to reach theatres on that date, but they just pushed that movie back to October 6th. That would have been a fine release date for Insidious 5 as well, being just a few weeks away from Halloween, but we’ll take getting it three months earlier.

When Insidious 5 was first announced, Wilson said,

I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices. Directing the movie is both professionally and personally a full circle moment for me, and I am extremely grateful to be entrusted in continuing to tell this frightening and haunting story. Into the further we go…

During an interview with Screen Rant earlier this year, Wilson told them,

It’s something that I’m super passionate about, and there hasn’t been a day since they pitched me the idea that I haven’t been all in. It’s been a lot of work by Scott Teems, the writer, and me. And Leigh Whannell has helped out obviously a ton, and of course Blumhouse is a great partner. I’ve done a bunch of stuff with them, so I couldn’t be happier to have my first experience with a very helpful and comfortable group of people that, for some reason, trust me. So, we’ll see.”

Wilson will be directing Insidious 5 from a screenplay by Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, based on an idea from Leigh Whannell, who created the franchise with James Wan. The story catches up with the family from the first two films, the Lamberts,

10 years after the last installment, as Dalton begins college.

Wilson is reprising the role of Josh Lambert, and Ty Simpkins is back as his son Dalton. We haven’t heard if the actors who played the rest of the Lambert family are coming back.
