Sony has announced a new release date for their psychological thriller ESCAPE ROOM, a project we were covering last year when it was assembling its cast and going under the title THE MAZE. Originally scheduled for a February 1, 2019 release, ESCAPE ROOM has been pushed up a few weeks and will now be reaching theatres on January 4, 2019.
That seems to be a sensible date. ESCAPE ROOM was directed by Adam Robitel, and when Sony released his previous film, INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY (pictured above), on January 5, 2018 the movie went on to earn almost $168 million on a $10 million budget. I don't know if they can replicate that success with a project that isn't an entry in a franchise, but they're going to give it a try.
Written by Bragi Schut and Maria Melnik, ESCAPE ROOM has been described as being in the vein of David Fincher's THE GAME. The story follows
six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to survive.
The cast includes Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Taylor Russell, Tyler Labine, Jay Ellis, and Nik Dodani.
ESCAPE ROOM will have some genre competition on its new date: January 4 also happens to be the day when the long-delayed remake of JACOB'S LADDER is finally supposed to be released.
