The next two AVENGERS movies will easily make up one of the largest cinematic events of all time. A culmination of everything the MCU has been working towards since the beginning of the series almost a decade ago, the films will pit the team against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in a massive brawl. Though originally the plan was to shoot both films at the same time, the plans have now changed to film each one separately.
While talking with Collider, Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige revealed that the plan had changed due to the difficulties of shooting two different movies at the same time:
We’re doing them one right after another… It became too complicated to cross-board them like that, and we found ourselves—again, something would always pay the price. We wanted to be able to focus and shoot one movie and then focus and shoot another movie.
This schedule would mean shooting scenes for both movies on the same day, at times, which could imaginably begin to take a toll after a while. Feige explained that shooting for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR would be done in June or July, and that production on the currently untitled AVENGERS 4 would pick up in August.
I can’t imagine this would affect the release of AVENGERS 4, so the news is warmly received. The notion that these two massive movies would be shooting all at once was extremely difficult to comprehend, and there’s no way it wouldn’t have an effect on the finished products. Now they can make the process more streamlined and linear, allowing everyone from the crew to the cast to focus more clearly on the task at hand. Good effort though, team, and know there’s no shame in admitting when you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. I learned that when I tried a whole Snickers at once, breaking my tooth in the process. Worth it.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives May 4, 2018, with AVENGERS 4 following one year later in 2019.
