From Fleabag to Star Wars and James Bond, Phoebe-Waller Bridge has risen through the ranks as both a writer and performer. While we have yet to see what her pen has brought to the 007 franchise, the British actress will next be seen on-screen opposite Harrison Ford in the upcoming fifth and final Indiana Jones movie.
The announcement from Lucasfilm and director James Mangold praised the returning creative team for the film which will also include legendary composer John Williams.
“I'm thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers," said the film's director James Mangold. "Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine. When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice, and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can't help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”
It is unknown what role Waller-Bridge will take in the new movie, but she is the first announced cast member after Ford. Forty years after originally playing Dr. Henry Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the fifth movie in the iconic franchise will be the first not directed by Steven Spielberg. Many were left underwhelmed by the fourth film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which introduced Shia LaBeouf as Jones's son and heir apparent, Mutt Williams. For now, there's no word on whether the new movie will pick up any narrative threads from the last entry.
Indiana Jones 5 is slated to hit theaters on July 29, 2022. Expect more casting announcements soon.
