Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny charting a course toward a Cannes Film Festival premiere

Indiana Jones’ next adventure could occur at this year’s Cannes Film Festival! According to Variety, the event has invited Disney to premiere Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the annual celebration of stage and screen. Last year, John Kosinski and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick soared at the event, and now, the fifth Indiana Jones movie looks to have the same blockbuster appeal.

Variety says Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny could premiere on the event’s second day (May 17) or day three (May 18). This arrangement creates a prime real estate venue for the highly-anticipated sequel, which features Harrison Ford as the intrepid explorer for the last time.

While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will primarily feature Harrison Ford at his current age, we know that the movie’s opening sequence will peel back the decades as it flashes back to the second World War. In the shots we’ve already seen in the teaser trailer for the movie, Ford looks damn near identical to how he appeared in the late 80s, and the actor was very impressed by the digital de-aging done by the VFX team. “I never loved the idea until I saw how it was accomplished in this case — which is very different than the way it’s been done in other films I’ve seen,” Ford said. “They’ve got every frame of film, either printed or unprinted, of me during 40 years of working with Lucasfilm on various stuff. I can act the scene and they sort through with AI every fucking foot of film to find me in that same angle and light. It’s bizarre and it works and it is my face. “

When James Mangold spoke to Entertainment Weekly in December, he quickly noted that his beloved X-Men film, Logan, was a “very purposefully and intentionally grim adventure, very dramatic, and very serious,” The Dial of Destiny will be different. “I am under no illusions that my job making an Indiana Jones film was to suddenly beat the humor out of it and turn it into some kind of dirge,” Mangold said. “I think that what we’re trying to do is balance both an accurate and realistic appraisal of where this character would be at this time in his life, and do that honestly, and at the same time, try and carry forward what the very title of our movie promises, which is a romp and a wonderful adventure with action and chivalry and escapes by the skin of your nose and ingenious solutions to diabolical problems. This is an Indiana Jones film.”

The official selections for this year’s Canned Film Festival will be announced on April 13. Swedish director Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness, The Square) will preside over the event taking place May 16-27.
