Over the past several weeks, we've seen the cast of Indiana Jones 5 grow little by little, and The Wrap has reported today that Thomas Kretschmann is the latest to join up. The actor is best known for his roles in The Pianist and King Kong as well as for playing Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He'll be joining Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who were cast earlier this month, as well as Harrison Ford, who will of course be reprising his iconic role. The nature of Kretschmann's role is being kept under wraps, but that's hardly surprising.
While Steven Spielberg had been expected to return to direct Indiana Jones 5, he stepped down last year, saying that he wanted to "pass along Indy's whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story." Logan director James Mangold stepped in to replace him and recently confirmed on Twitter that he's also working on the script alongside Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari). Production is expected to kick off later this year, but the most exciting news of all is that John Williams will also be returning to score the film. Although there's been talk of a new actor stepping into the role of Indiana Jones (and that's bound to happen eventually), producer Frank Marshall has previously reassured fans that Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones.
Yeah, we are working on the script. There will only be one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. What I’m excited about with Jim is a great story. I think you see that in his movies like Ford Vs Ferrari. It’s all about characters and telling a good story. So I’m excited to see what he comes up with. I haven’t seen (the script) yet so I don’t know what to tell you.
Indiana Jones 5 is currently slated to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
