Indiana Jones 5: Mads Mikkelsen joins Ford, Waller-Bridge

Indiana Jones 5, Mads Mikkelsen, Harrison Ford, sequel

After years of development, Indiana Jones 5 is no longer an idea but is quickly becoming a reality. On top of the news that Phoebe Waller-Bridge joined the cast last week as the female lead, another Lucasfilm alum will appear opposite Harrison Ford in the upcoming franchise-ending adventure. Mads Mikkelsen, best known as Galen Erso in Rogue One as well as Hannibal Lecter on NBC's Hannibal and Grindelwald in the upcoming third Fantastic Beasts film, will join James Mangold's film.

While Mikkelsen's role is undisclosed, he could easily be the villain or a member of Indy's entourage as they embark on their latest adventure. Mikkelsen has long been a renowned performer in his native Denmark, with his 2020 performance in Another Round making many shortlists for best of the year. He broke through in North America as Le Chiffre opposite Daniel Craig in Casino Royale before garnering a pretty substantial resume over the last decade.

Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel will produce alongside Steven Speilberg. Set to return to the franchise is famed composer John Williams, whose contributions to the 40-year-old franchise are the stuff of legend. For the moment, the plan is to start production this summer. In fact, Mangold is in the process of meeting with other talents to make certain that production goes smoothly. After all, you can't be too careful these days, vaccinations or not.

The long-gestating Indiana Jones sequel is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 29, 2022. We'll be sure to keep you up to date with all the details as they roll out.
