It’s been some time since we’ve gotten any word on Michael Mann‘s cyber thriller (simply dubbed ‘Cyber’ at the time), but thanks to this year’s SDCC, we have a title, release date and revised snyopsis. BLACKHAT will be one of the first films out the gate in 2015 and Legendary Films released an on-set picture of Hemsworth and Mann, respectively.
Here’s the updated synopsis from Legendary Films:
Set within the world of global cybercrime, Legendary’s BLACKHAT follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. Directed and produced by Michael Mann, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom, and it is written by Morgan Davis Foehl and Mann. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce alongside Mann, while Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod serve as the executive producers.
When it comes to the world of crime, Michael Mann has delivered some amazing cinematic entries with HEAT and COLLATERAL. Even his “lesser” films have an air of authenticity that shows Mann has a great handle on the material. Hemsworth hasn’t been out of the Thor spotlight too much, so I look forward to seeing what he can bring to Mann’s latest.
BLACKHAT, starring Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom, will be released on January 16, 2015.
