Netflix has recently purchased a new 8-episode comedy series from LUTHER and THOR: RAGNAROK star Idris Elba called TURN UP CHARLIE. For the show, Elba will star as a struggling DJ who gets his “final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.”
While the project might sound like a departure from Elba's extensive drama work, the PACIFIC RIM actor had a recurring role on the stateside version of THE OFFICE, and is currently starring on the U.K. comedy series IN THE LONG RUN. For that show, Elba plays Walter, a member of the Easmon family who live in a 1985 London. When a relative from Sierra Leone moves in, the familial group sees their quiet life disrupted by their newest houseguest.
Okay, seriously, why didn't anyone tell me that Idris Elba could spin? I mean really, check this guy out:
Do you think Idris would play at my next birthday party? I kinda think he would, he just seems like the type of guy who'd love to get the party started no matter the situation.
Elba co-created the series with producer Gary Reich, and will also executive produce as part of a partnership with Reich and Tristram Shapeero, with Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito as co-executive producers and Gil Isles as a producer. Scribes Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran, and Victoria Asare-Archer are expected to write the script with the aid of supervising producer Georgia Lester.
Production on the new 8-episode comedy series is expected to begin in May with Tristram Shapeero and Matt Lipset expected to direct.
