Boom! Studios has announced that they will be publishing a six issue comic book series that will see the iconic King Kong crossing paths with the also iconic super-intelligent talking apes of the PLANET OF THE APES franchise – but this crossover isn’t connected to KONG: SKULL ISLAND or WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES. The APES characters this Kong will be encountering will be characters from the original 1968 PLANET OF THE APES.
The Kong of the story is a version of the character that artist Joe DeVito has been working on building a universe around since 1992, in conjunction with the family of KING KONG producer/director Merian C. Cooper.
The comic book series Kong on the Planet of the Apes will be written by Ryan Ferrier, with Carlos Magno providing the artwork. The story is set after the events of PLANET OF THE APES ’68, when
General Ursus and Dr. Zaius accidentally uncover a Kong during an attempt to convince ape society that Taylor didn’t exist. That discovery leads to a second, potentially more terrifying, one: what has become of Skull Island during the time of the apes.
Ferrier had this to say about the crossover:
With this series, we’ve found a coherent, meaningful way of having these two worlds and their legacies fold into each other. The implications of the Ape civilization discovering the Kong world are huge, and that’s certainly on the forefront of the series.”
This series definitely has a lot of potential. Kong on the Planet of the Apes #1 will be reaching stores shelves in November.
Meanwhile, THE BYE BYE MAN‘s Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title are working with DeVito to create a television series called King Kong: Skull Island.
