UPDATE! Ian McShane cast as the lead dwarf in Snow White and the Huntsman

UPDATE 2: Bravo, Universal! Ray Winstone (HUGO CABRET) is said to have landed the role of ‘Trajan’, the seventh and final dwarf in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, according to THR.

So, it’s going to be…

Ian McShane as the leader Caesar
Bob Hoskins as the blind Constantine
Eddie Izzard as the burly Tiberius
Toby Jones as the timid Claudius
Ray Winstone as the twin Trajan
Eddie Marsan as the twin Hadrian
Stephen Graham as the angry Nero

/Film, however, believes that there may be an eighth dwarf – ‘Gus’ – that’s appeared in other incarnations of the film’s screenplay. If that character is still in the latest drafts that writer Evan Spiliotopoulos is currently working on, then I imagine we can expect to hear about that casting soon as well.

UPDATE 1: THR is now reporting that Bob Hoskins (SUPER MARIO BROS.), Eddie Izzard (VALKYRIE), and Toby Jones (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER) are all in negotiations to join Ian McShane as fellow dwarfs in Rupert Sanders’s Snow White re-imagining. Hoskins would play the blind Constantine, Izzard the burly Tiberius, and Jones the timid Claudius. Actors Eddie Marsan (WAR HORSE) and Stephen Graham (TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY) are in negotiations to play unspecified dwarfs as well.

June 21, 2011: Relativity’s untitled Snow White project from director Tarsem Singh (IMMORTALS) may have gotten the jump on Universal’s SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN in the release date department, but the latter is arguably boasting the stronger and more interesting cast of the two (so far).

THR’s Heat Vision is reporting that Ian McShane (“Deadwood”) has been brought in to play ‘Caesar’, the leader of the dwarfs, in the Rupert Sanders-directed film. The revisionist take will incorporate the dwarfs in a different manner by having each one named after a Roman ruler (e.g. Caesar, Claudius, Constantine, Gus, Hadrian, Nero, Trajan, and Tiberius). The film “features Snow White (Kristen Stewart) as a princess who escapes her evil stepmother (Charlize Theron) with the help of a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) who was to have killed her but now trains the princess to survive and fight back.”

Tarsem Singh’s version is beginning production right now for a March 16, 2012 release, while HUNTSMAN won’t get underway until sometime in August with a release currently set for June 1, 2012. McShane, meanwhile, can be seen right now (though I’d advise against it) in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES.
