Hungry gators terrorize Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper in Crawl trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Movies about sharks terrorizing poor humans have been on the rise recently, with THE SHALLOWS, 47 METERS DOWN and THE MEG becoming bona fide hits. But sharks can’t be doing all the heavy lifting, and when they need a siesta that’s when the gators come in. The new movie CRAWL finds a giant reptile (unless there’s more than one?!) making life a living hell for a woman (Kaya Scodelario, PIRATES 5) and her father (Barry Pepper, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, TRUE GRIT) who are just trying to survive a nasty hurricane. Soon the fight just to stay afloat also involves trying not to get eaten, and the very first trailer doesn’t waste time showing us just how big those teeth are.

Directed by Alexandre Aja (THE HILLS HAVE EYES), written by Michael and Shawn Rasmussen and produced by Sam Raimi (EVIL DEAD, SPIDER-MAN), the movie from Paramount looks to be capitalizing on the massive-water-creature-attacks-everyone resurgence of movies because, frankly, why wouldn’t they? These movies can be super fun, and CRAWL looks like it has some serious kills and plenty of tension, so for anyone who has a passion for these sorts of movies could find plenty to love here. You got gators with big teeth, big claws and who make the water their home against humans with normal teeth, no claws and who may not be very good swimmers. That's the definition of entertainment!

Here’s a synopsis, in case it wasn’t clear:

When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears.

CRAWL is in theaters July 12.
