A few months ago, photographer Caitlin Cronenberg teamed up with her father, legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg, to bring us the unnerving short film The Death of David Cronenberg, which was sold as an NFT but also released on YouTube for anyone to watch. Now it has been announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the younger Cronenberg will be making her feature directorial debut with a thriller called Humane.
Scripted by producer Michael Sparaga, Humane will chronicle
the events at a family dinner, held after an environmental collapse where the world lost 20 percent of its population, when a father’s plan to enlist in the government’s new euthanasia program goes horribly wrong.
Humane is a Canada-Belgium co-production between Sparaga’s Victory Man Productions and Frakas Productions. Martin Katz and Karen Wookey serve as executive producers. The project has already secured Canadian distribution from Elevation Pictures. XYZ Films are financing the film (which also received development financing from The Harold Greenberg Fund, Ontario Creates, and Telefilm Canada) and will be representing global sales rights outside of Canada and Belgium.
In addition to The Death of David Cronenberg, Caitlin Cronenberg has also directed commercials, music videos, and a short film called The Endings, which was based on her photography book of the same name. She has also been the still photographer on over fifty movies and TV shows.
Humane will be filming in Hamilton and Toronto, with production expected to begin sometime in the spring of 2022.
We’ve seen multiple movies from Cronenberg’s dad and from her brother Brandon, so it will be interesting to see a feature film from her as well.
