The less said about X-MEN ORIGINS: WOlVERINE the better. I could easily (I’m talking slightly unattractive girl at 1:55 AM easy) go on and on about how much of a disservice to the character that film is, but to be honest it’s too easy of a target. We have THE WOLVERINE coming up so lets just forget about the origins movie. It’s time to let it go. Deadpool fans, feel free to continue to bitch; I understand.
Hugh Jackman has expressed time and time again for his love for Logan, but even he thinks his portrayal has lacked something. In an interview in the new issue of Empire he says, “I don’t think we’ve seen the definitive Wolverine.” Hugh Jackman also added, “And the longer I play the character, the more the desire to get him right grows. The more I speak to fans and explore his world, the more it means to me. Look, there’s no question that it’s a great role.”
Wolverine and Hugh Jackman will always be connected and I think he really wants Wolverine to go down as one of the great epic movie characters. This is his Hannibal Lecter or Terminator, and I do believe he wants to raise the bar with THE WOLVERINE. In the interview he also talks about the living up to and understanding the legacy of Wolverine:
“I didn’t fully understand that when I went in, you know? The pressure now is [much bigger]. I feel I understand why there’s the passion. I understand the character and the legacy and I don’t feel, up until this movie, that we’ve completely lived up to that. So that’s what I intend to do.”
In my opinion, I think Hugh Jackman‘s selling himself short a bit, but I understand where he’s coming from. He doesn’t want his Wolverine to be remembered for chomping on cigars and calling everyone ‘bub. That is a part of the character but it shouldn’t be what MAKES the character. We need that rage that really only has been hinted at, the closest being the attack on the mansion in X2: X-MEN UNITE UNITE. I wonder how THE WOLVERINE will tie in (if at all) with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST since Logan is set to appear in that as well.
There’s also a rumor that we could be seeing a trailer (or at least a trailer) online by February 12th and hitting theaters two days later in front of A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD. Hopefully we’ll get a better look at this “definitive” Wolverine then.
THE WOLVERINE directed by James Mangold (3:10 TO YUMA, WALK THE LINE) and also starring Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Will Yun Lee and Svetlana Khodchenkova slices theaters berserker rage style June 26th, 2013.
