If you're wondering why Netflix continues to stay in business with Adam Sandler, look no further than the recent results of their recent collaboration, HUBIE HALLOWEEN. According to a report by Variety, the Halloween comedy is Netflix's highest-ranking movie of 2020 in the United States.
The result allows HUBIE HALLOWEEN to only fall behind the Polish drama 365 DAYS on the platform. Netflix and other streamers have been thrown more heavily into the spotlight due to a year that has seen a global pandemic shutter movie theaters nationwide. While exhibitors were closed for months, streaming became even more popular with consumers and it's believed that in the case of HUBIE HALLOWEEN, it's possibly one of the most-watched movies of the year and that's without seeing a release in theaters for a single day.
The success of HUBIE HALLOWEEN only solidifies the extended contract that Netflix has gone into with Sandler that will include four new films. Critics aren't usually in love with Sandler's Netflix offerings but the general audience seems to flock over to a Sandler new release whenever they hit Netflix. Back in 2019, the Adam Sandler comedy MURDER MYSTERY was the streamer's most popular movie as it was the single most-watched piece of content on the service in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Singapore, and UAE. Sandler began his Netflix deal back in 2014 with an option to produce four films for the platform. The deal was re-upped in 2017 to four more films and they have included THE RIDICULOUS 6, THE DO-OVER, SANDY WEXLER, THE WEEK OF, and MURDER MYSTERY. The deal also included a stand-up special, 100% Fresh. Breaking down the numbers, Netflix says that customers have spent over two billion hours watching Sandler's films on the streamer since THE RIDICULOUS 6 premiered in 2015.
In HUBIE HALLOWEEN, despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem (and its Halloween celebration), Hubie Dubois (Sandler) is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. Dubois patrols the streets of his town every Halloween to make sure the celebrations don't get out of hand but this Halloween he discovers that the town has been invaded by actually monsters. It's now up to Hubie to save his community and alert his friends and neighbors to the danger at hand. The film also stars Noah Schnapp, Paris Berelc, Julie Bowen, Karan Brar, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph, June Squibb, Steve Buscemi, Shaquille O'Neal, and Ray Liotta.
