Howard caches director?

Variety reports today that Ron Howard is eyeing up the director’s chair for the American remake of CACHE (which King JoBlo hit up here). The original thriller, written and directed by Michael Haneke (who also won a best director prize at Cannes in ’05 for the film), scored about $3.6 million on this side of the pond when it was released last year by Sony. The remake, on the other hand, is being handled by Universal, with Brian Grazer producing.

This will be the second film of Haneke’s that’s set to be remade Stateside, as his 1997 thriller, FUNNY GAMES, is also set to be remade and released later this year (Naomi Watts is currently in negotiation for that one, with Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt already onboard).

The original CACHE centres on an upper-class French couple who start receiving anonymous videotapes on their front porch featuring their home and other parts of their lives. After a few days, the tapes begin to include disturbing pictures and content, leading the couple to become somewhat paranoid as the element of trust and their past comes into play.
