It was announced today that Hulu has canceled How I Met Your Father after two seasons, which means that fans may never get to know the answer to the question posed by the title.
Set in the near future in 2050, How I Met Your Father follows Sophie (Kim Cattrall) telling her son the story of how she met his father back in the year 2022, when Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her close-knit group of friends – Jesse (Chris Lowell), Valentina (Francia Raisa), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), Ellen (Tien Tran) and Sid (Suraj Sharma) — were figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.
Although How I Met Your Father largely stood alone from I Met Your Mother, it did feature a few appearances from the stars of the original series, including Cobie Smulders as Robin and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney.
How I Met Your Father was given a full series order in 2021. “We are beyond excited to be bringing How I Met Your Father to Hulu,” said Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger in a statement at the time. “Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation — and with Hilary Duff no less! We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice.“
The series was quickly picked up for a super-sized second season consisting of twenty episodes “Isaac and Elizabeth’s inspired vision for How I Met Your Father has proven to be true appointment viewing that fans cannot get enough of week to week,” said Jordan Helman, Head of Scripted Content at Hulu Originals. “The lives of these characters, as portrayed by the immensely talented cast led by Hilary Duff, are just starting to unfold and we’re thrilled to bring more of this group’s journey to our viewers with a supersized second season.“
