It’s been ages since I got invited to a cinematic rager like the parties we used to see in the 1990s. Today, you can’t throw back a few cocktails without having someone stick a camera in front of your face, documenting all your misdeeds. Kid and Play would be ashamed, and for a good reason. However, Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole hope to honor the tradition of trashing a house the old-fashioned way with a celebration that breaks all the rules. Put on a slick fit and roll a few doobs because Calmatic’s House Party trailer is here to take gatherings to the next level.
Produced by The Springhill Company and distributed by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, House Party is a remake of 1990’s House Party, starring Kid (Christopher Reid) and Play (Christopher Martin). Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover wrote the script, with LeBron James and Maverick Carter producing through The SpringHill Company.
Karen Obilom, D.C. Young Fly, and Scott Mescudi join Latimore and Cole as cast members.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Your VIP ticket to New Line’s remix of the fan-favorite ’90s classic. Aspiring club promoters and best buds Damon (Tosin Cole) and Kevin (Jacob Latimore) are barely keeping things together. Out of money, down on their luck, and about to lose the roofs over their heads—and freshly fired from their low-lift jobs as house cleaners—the pair needs a huge windfall to make their problems go away. In a ‘what the hell?’ move, they decide to host the party of the year at an exclusive mansion, the site of their last cleaning job, which just happens to belong to none other than LeBron James. No permission? No problem. What could go wrong? How about a time-traveling DJ, undependable security, a runaway guest list, one borrowed Lamborghini, angry rival promoters, a stolen championship ring, escalating property damage, and an angry koala..? But also, one outrageous ride stacked with double-take cameos and timeless throwback tracks, R-rated comedy, and two friends worth cheering for, you have to see to believe. After all, a night like this doesn’t come around more than once.
Calmatic’s House Party trailer drips with style, speaking to the director’s history as a helmer of engaging music videos. In addition to House Party, Calmatic is directing a remake of White Men Can’t Jump, written by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall.
The House Party trailer brings me back to when ragers were unpredictable and cops could show up at any moment. I once threw a party at my parent’s place that got way out of control. The cops didn’t break it up, but word got around, and more than 100 people showed up to the party. I guess that happens when you invite one of the most incredible local bands to play in your backyard.
