Fire will reign this Sunday when HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon swoops in for its series premiere on HBO Max. HBO Max released a House of the Dragon final trailer to celebrate the show’s arrival on Thursday, promising dragons and destruction as far as the eye can see.
The upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off is set hundreds of years before the original series. It is based upon George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a Targaryen history book that chronicles the history of House Targaryen, starting with “Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and [going on] to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the throne, all the way up to the civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, that nearly tore their dynasty apart.” Miguel Sapochnik, who helmed many episodes of Game of Thrones, has previously teased that House of the Dragon will have its own tone compared to Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon comes from co-creators and showrunners Ryan Condal (Colony) and Miguel Sapochnik (Finch). The series stars Matt Smith as dragonrider Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon (also known as the Sea Snake), Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.
HBO Max’s final trailer for House of the Dragon showcases plenty of action and intrigue, but will the footage bring disgruntled Game of Thrones fans back into the fold? A significant portion of the Game of Thrones fandom was disappointed by the final season of the original series, leaving House of the Dragon in a compromised position. Some fans will march into House of the Dragon with their guard up, ready and willing to talk trash before the show can breathe. I hope the opening episode is a banger. Otherwise, we could be in for a long haul of online nattering and shit-posting.
