For many genre fans, director Neil LaBute will never be able to live down the mistakes of his 2006 version of The Wicker Man (Nicolas Cage says it was intended to be a comedy)… but he has made some really good movies beyond that one, and his dark comedy / seductive thriller House of Darkness sounds very promising. We’ll see how this one turned out soon, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that Saban Films will be giving the House of Darkness a limited theatrical release on September 9th, which will be followed by a VOD release on September 13th.
Starring Justin Long (Tusk) and Kate Bosworth (Before I Wake), House of Darkness tells the following story:
Driving home to her secluded estate after meeting at a local bar, a player out to score thinks his beautiful, mysterious date will be another casual hook-up. While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Hoping to get lucky, his luck may have just run out.
Gia Crovatin (Dirty Weekend) and Lucy Walters (the Get Shorty TV series) are also in the cast.
Daryl Freimark, Tim Harms, and Shaun Sanghani produced House of Darkness, with Michael Barnett as associate producer, Shelley D. Needham as co-producer, and Stephen Morgenstern and Jonathan Saba as executive producers.
As for what LaBute has directed other than the remake of The Wicker Man, the list includes In the Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors, Nurse Betty, Possession (2002), The Shape of Things, Lakeview Terrace, Death at a Funeral (2010), and episodes of Hell on Wheels, Billions, Billy & Billie, and The I-Land, among other things. It was recently announced that he’s working with Maggie Q on a home invasion thriller called Fear the Night.
