Horror @ the Box Office – May 27-29: A sad, genre-free Top 10

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

Holiday weekends aren’t usually too hot for the genre, and Memorial Day was no exception. As expected, THE HANGOVER II and KUNG FU PANDA 2 dominated at the box office, and no new horror movies were released. Sadly, we had a genre-free Top 10.

The highest ranking horror flick was Scott Charles Stewart’s PRIEST, which which came in at #11 with $1.7 million in its third week. Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE remained at #18 with $324,000, which is pretty good for its ninth week. James Wan’s INSIDIOUS and Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 both fell out of the Top 20.

Not much to report on otherwise. Next weekend, the only wide release hitting theaters is Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST LAST, which I suppose is as close to a genre flick as we’ll get. The following week, however, we’ll finally see the release of J.J. Abrams’ Super 8.
