Horror @ the Box Office – July 8-10: Transformers 3 is year’s highest grosser

Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON retained its #1 position at the box office. Even with a 52% drop off, it raked in another $47 million. With a two-week total of $261 million, it’s faring better than TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN did at this point in its run.

After breaking the Independence Day weekend gross record last week, the film has officially beat out THE HANGOVER PART II to become the highest-grossing domestic film of the year. Do you think it will maintain this position, or will it be outdone by the likes of the upcoming HARRY POTTER or TWILIGHT sequels?

J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8 is still holding its on, bringing in $4.8 million in the #7 spot in its fifth week. No other genre flicks in the Top 10, but Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS took in $1.5 million at #13. Farther down the line, Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE made another $26,000 at its few remaining theaters.

There’s nothing to look forward to genre-wise next weekend, unless you’re a fan of the HARRY POTTER flicks. The series’ highly anticipated final entry opens, so we’ll see how it compares to TRANSFORMERS 3. Otherwise the only other wide release is WINNIE THE POOH.
