After weeks without much horror to speak of, I’m happy to report that J.J. Abrams’ SUPER 8 opened at #1 at the box office. It only made $37 million, which isn’t that exciting considering its $50 million budget and all of the hype surrounding it. However, if you’ve seen the flick, you know that it has staying power, so word of mouth may help its run.
Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS came in at #2 with $25 million, suffering from a drop off of about 55%. Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE landed at #20 with $169,000. Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 was far behind with $38,000.
We’ll see if SUPER 8 will continue to gain steam next week or be derailed by THE GREEN LANTERN or MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS. Miguel Angel Vivas’ KIDNAPPED is also premiering in New York, and Astron-6’s FATHER’S DAY opens in limited theaters on Sunday.
