Genetic experimentation has always been fertile ground for horror because it is both possible, and provides a reasonably believable scenario where real life monstrosities could be unleashed upon the world.
With SPLICE coming out with it’s high profile casting and serious vibe, it looks like the genetic lotto is getting another spin in one of the more promising looks at the issue in some time.
So this week let’s take a look at the best of the movies that give us some good ole DNA smoothies. Now if you want to get heavy, spit bullets about your opinion on the real life issue of genetic manipulation. Or just throw out your fav flick with a mad mixing vibe.

5. SPECIES
Yeah, let’s bring on this kind of alien splicing all the time. If we’re gonna get taken over then I’m pretty OK with it if they all look like Natasha Henstridge and are super hot to bang all the time. Sure there’s the tentacle death that awaits you once said coitus is done, but man, if ya gotta go, go like that!
4. SLITHER
I love watching James Gunn stuff his diminutive girlfriend into a pillow case as much as the next red-blooded male, but I do wish he’d come back to a horror project. Because Slither, with it’s exploding preggo slug slingers and the truly disturbing Grant Grant-alien hybrid is easily one of the best horror comedies in recent memory. If only we could’ve gotten some naked Banks action then it woulda been perfect.
3. UNDERWORLD
I think this is the only three-way species mash on the list. I mean, human, vampire and werewolf? Ladies just drop your panties right now ’cause who the hell could resist this fantasy hodgepodge. I’ll admit that when I first saw this I was somewhat underwhelmed by the creature combination, but the more I’ve watched it the more I’ve become a fan of the understated, but violently lean form. Of course, it also helped that when I caught this the first time I was totally invested in the story because I didn’t know the sequels would waste all that potential yet.
2. THE FLY
Bring it Cronenberg. If you want to see weird intermingling of shite that just don’t go together then this is your man, and has been for as long as many of us have been alive. Even better is that you have a very odd looking human in Goldblum, merging with one of the most distasteful insects on the planet. So you knew the result would be awesome. And it was. I heart Brundlefly.

I can’t think of another story that’s been told so many times and still retains so much watchability. The pod people are in many ways the scariest mess yet, because as my 5 year-old son would put it, “They just dead you, and then they BE you.” Quick, efficient, and impossible to escape, this is maybe the worst nightmare scenario of them all when it comes to genetic chicanery.
