EPISODE 11: Knots Untie
THE HOOK: Jesus takes Rick and a few others back to meet his people and set up a trade agreement, but as always, complications arise.
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode
THE LOWDOWN: And suddenly, having sex is now a ‘thing’ on The Walking Dead. I’m not exactly complaining. On the one hand, I love how tonight opened with pretty much everyone storming the house to find Rick and Michonne coming out of the room together—Jesus referring to them as Carl’s ‘mom and dad’ was hilarious, but I’m not sure what the hell’s up with Abraham. Yes, he’s conflicted, I get that much, but he got shot down, and he’s still having sex with Rosita so can’t be all that conflicted. All that isn’t the problem though, Abraham just appears to be losing his shit all episode and I don’t like that one bit. Be supportive of having babies, sure, but damn bro, keep your eyes focused on the prize or you’ll end up zombie food. I make this point simply because he’s one of my favorite characters on the show.
I think the table talk with Jesus went pretty good, considering. Rick and his crew have been through too much, so trust isn’t something they’ll part with easily, especially Daryl. He’s looking to kill (three times over) first, and be damned if he’s gonna ask any questions. I like that, someone’s got to be trigger happy now that Rick’s trying to be all understanding and stuff. The one thing I found a little unnecessary tonight was the accident/rescue of Jesus’ people. It just felt like a plug for pregnancy and another ‘hey guys, we’re having a baby’ nod, like for some reason there was still fan or two out there who have yet to piece it together. Add to that, the ‘accident’ was showcased like an attack, I don’t think it was, yet they still didn’t quite clarify what happened to the car. Either way, in my opinion, they should have just drove straight to the compound and avoided fifteen or so minutes of filler.
Jesus’ compound was a refreshing change for the show, like he said at the table, ‘your world is about to get a whole lot bigger.’ This is huge as far as I’m concerned. Obviously, we’ve seen rogue parties of people throughout the show, and even a few settlements, but to find out there are numerous, functioning, trading communities out there, well, that changes everything. Gregory’s a dick, which came as a bit of surprise considering how pleasant both Jesus and the doctor are. That said, Xander Berkeley (the dude playing Gregory) is more often not, a dick in whatever role he’s playing so it makes sense. He doesn’t spill the beans on how things really work until he’s stabbed by one of his own, causing all hell to break loose. That fight was nuts, but Rick quickly joined Daryl’s ‘take no prisoners’ stance and put foot to ass, or rather, knife to throat. It’d been awhile since we saw Rick’s face covered in blood, so it felt right.
THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 6’s eleventh episode opened the floodgates for Neegan. Just like that, they agree to kill his ass and rescue Jesus’ guy. I love how they pawn it off as ‘just another day at the office.’ It sort of is, I suppose, and it’s not like they have much of a choice, they do want to eat, but being a comic reader (like the rest of you out there, I’m sure) it gave me a knot in my stomach. I’m a little surprised they weren’t talking about Neegan and The Saviors last week though, it just seems like a perfect topic of conversation for Rick and Daryl’s road trip—much more interesting than listing to Rick’s hillbilly road mix. Be that as it may, cat’s out of the bag now, but seeing as how Neegan’s grand reveal won’t happen until the season finale, I’m more than curious to see what our group will be doing for the next three or four episodes. I just hope it’s not a bunch of ridiculous filler.
ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Well, some zombies got killed in close quarters, but nothing memorable there, so we’ll go with Rick stabbing dude in the throat. That was a good kill.
BLOOD AND GORE: Rick managed to get covered in blood in a cool ass fight scene, but other than that, we only saw a little zombie gore via a car accident.
COOLEST SCENE: I laughed my ass off when Carl was staring at Michonne with a grin on his face. It was a quick scene, but it was definitely and awesome moment.
