From 1993 to 2002, The X Files reigned supreme. One of the first shows (Twin Peaks aside) to mix deep spiraling mythology into a standard procedural that caught on with genre fans and a mainstream audience alike. I can’t stress how important this was before the golden age of dramatic television. The creator and showrunner Chris Carter gave us the first movie, which was directed by Rob Bowman, The X Files: Fight The Future (WATCH IT HERE – OWN IT HERE). This bridged the gap between seasons five and six and was well regarded by critics and fans. It continued the story and mythology while also appealing to the casual moviegoer who wasn’t up to date on the show.
But seven years after the series finale, Chris Carter came back with a second movie that acted as a standalone story in the vein of the “Monster Of The Week” episodes the show was famous for. The X Files: I Want to Believe (WATCH IT HERE – OWN IT HERE) was not well received and seemed like an odd choice for a movie revival that decided and a singular story and not a continuation of the original mythology. Though not nearly as good as the show’s peak or the first movie, The X Files: I Want to Believe brings back the charm and chemistry and delivers a small-scale thriller that gets more hate than it deserves. Join us as we explore our favorite FBI agent’s second outing on this week’s episode of The Black Sheep.
Directed by Chris Carter and starring David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, The X Files: I Want to Believe has the following synopsis:
Mulder and Scully are called back to duty by the FBI when a former priest claims to be receiving psychic visions pertaining to a kidnapped agent.
