One of the most exciting of this month's new horror releases is the Netflix mini-series The Haunting of Hill House, which is based on Shirley Jackson's classic 1959 novel with the same title and directed by Mike Flanagan. With movies like OCULUS, HUSH, GERALD'S GAME, and OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL, Flanagan has proven himself to be a great genre filmmaker; I'll watch anything he makes, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he has done with this mini-series.
The Haunting of Hill House will be available for viewing through the Netflix streaming service as of October 12th, and with the release just 10 days away a featurette has arrived online to give us an interesting look behind the scenes of the project.
Described as a "modern reimagining" of Jackson's story, the mini-series centers on
a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past — some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.
The cast includes Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, Timothy Hutton, Annabeth Gish, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Victoria Pedretti, Mckenna Grace, Violet McGraw, Lulu Wilson, Paxton Singleton, and Julian Hilliard.
In the featurette embedded below, several of those cast members join Flanagan in discussing the show and how the director intends to scare viewers over the course of its ten hours. As Flanagan puts it, they're telling
a truly complex human story that happens to be wrapped in the skin of horror."
Check out the featurette and decide whether or not you'll be binge watching The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix later this month.
This isn't the first adaptation of Jackson's novel. Her story previously served as the basis for two feature films, THE HAUNTING 1963 and THE HAUNTING 1999.
