Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green, the team behind Halloween 2018 (watch it HERE) and its upcoming sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, are planning to continue their working relationship by revitalizing another classic horror property: Blumhouse and Morgan Creek are developing a sequel to the 1973 classic The Exorcist (watch that HERE), with Green in talks to direct.
Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson will be producing this Exorcist sequel.
No further details have been revealed at this time, so we don't know who will be writing the movie or what the story will be.
Directed by William Friedkin from a screenplay by William Peter Blatty (based on Blatty's novel of the same name), the original The Exorcist had the following synopsis:
When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.
Given what Green and Blumhouse did with Halloween, I wouldn't be surprised to see some actors or characters from The Exorcist come back for this new sequel – but again, we don't know anything for sure at this point in the development. We probably shouldn't expect Friedkin to get involved like John Carpenter got involved with the Halloween movies, because Friedkin has said
I would not do a prequel or a sequel (to The Exorcist), absolutely not, under no circumstances and for no amount of money."
Green is also working on a Hellraiser TV series for HBO. It's been interesting to watch his career evolve over the years. When Green started out with arthouse indies, I never would have thought that he'd segue into directing stoner comedies, and once he was making stoner comedies I never imagined he'd move on to directing follow-ups to classic horror properties.
