Andrew Fleming's THE CRAFT just celebrated its 21st birthday at the beginning of this month, and that lead me to thinking it has been forever and a day since we last heard anything on the Leigh Janiak-helmed remake of the 1996 bitch-witch classic.
Actually, the last thing we heard was that the remake was technically not even a remake at all and was set to be a sequel to the original film. Maybe that was where the "problem" was… as it turns out the remake/sequel is getting a new writer as Sony has hired Daniel Casey (10 CLOVERFIELD LANE) to rewrite Janiak’s script.
Janiak was originally announced as the head of the new film way back in May of 2015. and in that deal, she was also set to write the film along wither HONEYMOON co-writer, Phil Graziadei.
While this is sad news for me as a fan of Janiak's work thus far, it is a good sign (I guess) for THE CRAFT remake/sequel as it shows Sony is still willing to pour further cash into the flick.
Also, the new film is being produced by the same team that produced the original so we know the film is in the right hands. On way or the other, we here at AITH will keep you guys up to date on THE CRAFT. Whatever it ends up being.
THE CRAFT synopsis:
A newcomer to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft and they all soon conjure up various spells and curses against those who even slightly anger them.
THE CRAFT was directed by Andrew Fleming and stars Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell (see below), Rachel True, Skeet Ulrich, Christine Taylor and Breckin Meyer
