Back in February, we let you guys in on the strange news that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Syfy are bringing back something called THE BANANA SPLITS. The trippy characters were introduced back in 1968 as the anthropomorphic hosts of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour variety program. The group featured a lion, a beagle, an elephant, and an orange gorilla. But now it seems that the creepy bunch will be returning in a horror-thriller. Which makes complete sense. I mean look at them (above)!
Anyhow, today we have word via the MPAA that the movie has been slapped with an R-rating for "horror violence and gore." Nice! Gotta love it.
Here's the official synopsis for the upcoming horror thriller:
A boy named Harley and his family (brother Austin, mother Beth, and father Mitch) attends a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn — and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom and their new pals safely escape?
The revival stars Dani Kind (WYNONNA EARP) as Beth, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS), Romeo Carere as Austin, Steve Lund (SCHITT'S CREEK) as Mitch and Sara Canning (THE VAMPIRE DIARIES) as Rebecca. Danishka Esterhazy (LEVEL 16) is directing from a script by Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas (RAVEN'S HOME). Blue Ribbon Content is producing in association with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and SYFY.
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour characters were originally created by the Krofft Brothers for Hanna-Barbera, which produced 31 episodes of the show that originally aired from 1968-70. The original movie will premiere this year from Blue Ribbon Content and Warner Bros Television Group’s digital studio. That release will then be followed by the television debut on Syfy. We'll let you know when we hear more!
