I have to tip my hat to TCM
Underground this week in regards to their film choice. That’s right folks, this
week Rob Zombie will be showing the controversial 1932 Tod Browning flick
FREAKS.
Many of you may know Browning from his directing Bela Lugosi in the 1931 version
of DRACULA, but FREAKS was the movie that Browning really pushed the envelope
with.
FREAKS shows the story of a dwarf who is married to a full size women, a trapeze
artist in a traveling circus circa 1930’s. The women begins an affair with the
circus strong man, and the two plot to off the dwarf, who holds an enormous
inheritance. However the rest of the “freaks” discover what the two have done,
and enact their own sort of vigilante justice.
Browning cast real life “freaks” in the roles, and creates a visually stunning
masterpiece which ends up being incredibly disturbing as well.

It’s so bizarre I can guarantee you’ll never see anything like it again.
FREAKS will be played on TCM Underground at 2am EST, and will be followed by
another Browning classic THE MARK OF THE VAMPIRE.
